There are few words in the English language that can be used to describe this novel. Engrossing is one, intense is the other. For Matthew and Lily, Tom and Maggie World War 11 has different meanings, but the plot of this novel, so confusing in parts so graphic in others, so poignant all through, weaves its magic on the reader as we wind our way to the eventual conclusion. Two sisters, two soldiers and the descendants and Heirlooms left after they have gone is a homage to World War 11 veterans, the celebrated and the forgotten. I'm Jewish and most of my dad's side of the family were murdered during the Holocaus and I read a lot of books about that time in history and I felt the author really did a lot of research about how Jewish people felt in Germany when Hitler took over .I never heard of Wobbelin camp before but I did some reading and it just broke my heart .I visited Auschwitz Birkenau almost 3 years ago and also Terezin camp a few years earlier and as much as I read and saw movies before nothing compared to seeing it with your own two eyes and just thinking about the soldiers liberating the camps and seeing the results of pure evil :(Two of my fav quotes from the book :" there hope, in war?” He nodded, the movement swift and sure. “There has to be. A belief, a faith that one day this will all be over, and the evil of fascism will be forever wiped from the world.”"“You want to believe all Nazis were inhuman monsters, but they were people like us. They had wives and children and slept and laughed and all the rest. How could they have done such terrible, terrible things? How could anyone?” “I don’t know, but it scares me, that someone could. We’re all only one step away from savagery.”I really hope more people will read and learn more about WW2 and never forget what happened .
