I watched the Amazon Prime series of Picnic at Hanging Rock. It made me want to read the book. Although I liked both, I have to admit....and this is really strange....but, I like the Amazon Prime series more than the book. I think I liked the series more because it was so visually impressive. The school grounds and the rock really stay with you. I would highly recommend seeing the Prime series and reading the book. They go well together. I would give this book a 3.5 stars. The atmospheric mood, how the harsh Australian landscape takes on a life of its own and really is a character in its own right builds ever so slowly and becomes more and more sinister and eerie as the book progresses. At times, the descriptions of the changing light, the rough and scrubby earth, the gum trees made me feel as if I was there.One of the words I'd describe about the book is peculiar. There's a strange hodgepodge of characters thrown together; the Appleyard School girls and the haughty mistress, the rich and beautiful Irma, the strange schoolmistress Dora, the coachman Albert, the aristocratic Mike, somehow I thought perhaps this may lead to a who-dunnit type book. The juxtaposition between the prim school and the wild landscape is just brilliant.The disappointment at times for me was the unbelievability of the characters and plot. Most of the book's characters have no motive as far as the disappearance of the three girls and the school mistress.This book leads to more questions than answers. Perhaps this is part of the lure of the book. But it was frustrating. The detailed descriptions of the characters helped bring them to life, but as a reader I would have liked to imagine some motive and opportunity regarding the characters to increase the tension. Parts of the book were a stretch for me. With that said, the language is lush and vivid. Can't wait to see the movie now!
